A brief review of Surround-sound technology from cinema in the 1940s to the digital high-definition home in the 21st century by James McKee, Technical Director, DTS.
6:00pm for 6:30pm start.
Wellington Park Hotel, Malone Road, Belfast
At present the world of home entertainment is on the cusp of the next big revolution - High Definition (HD). But what does this really mean for the consumer? The move to high resolution video in digital broadcast and high capacity optical media (HD DVD and Blu-Ray) mixed with the availability of HD consumer displays paves the way to a future of crisper, clearer and larger video reproduction in the home. But what is the future hold for audio? After all, without audio it's all only surveillance footage.
This presentation discusses the consumer technologies behind high quality, surround sound audio that is set to become an integral part of the HD user experience. Surround sound has been popularized in the past years with the advent of DVD-Video (DVD-V) but has in fact been around for over 60 years. The past, present and future of multi-channel audio systems will be explored with demonstrations of today's state of the art codecs. The demonstrations will include play out of high resolution and 6.1 channel audio material, both music and movie. Also there will be an interactive demo of discrete multi-channel audio on the playstation, players welcome after the presentations end!
